About “In The Next Room or The Vibrator Play”
This Pulitzer Prize nominated play tells the story of a Victorian Doctor and his wife and his patients as they examine their relationships in the dawn of electricity and the doctor’s new “invention.” Ms. Ruhl’s complex and hilarious domestic comedy explores the eternal questions of intimacy, romance and the challenges of love in a time filled with societal restrictions and male dominance. The journeys of her characters are both profound and poignant as they find enlightenment and their eyes are opened to the beauty of souls unabashedly connected through the power of love!
In The Next Room or The Vibrator Play was originally commissioned and produced by Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Berkeley, CA in February, 2009. The play made its way to Broadway and was produced by the Lincoln Center Theater in November, 2009. The play was nominated for the 2010 Tony Award for Best Play and was selected as a Finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize.
