Sweet O Donuts

Sweet O Donuts1Donuts are a universally loved comfort food. They are delicious in every form from the humble boxed Entenmann's to the warm, comforting freshness of a glazed twist right out of the oven.

I find most donut shops to be pretty uniform and am usually content to eat anything shaped like a tube that's fried and glazed. Then one day I volunteered to babysit at 6 a.m. and was graciously rewarded with a half dozen goodies from Sweet O Donuts. Within minutes I was in a soothing, starchy food coma and reading Thomas the Tank Engine to a 4 year old.

The glazed buttermilk bar is not too heavy and has the perfect amount of crispness on the outside  to harmonize with the soft, milky inside. The glazed donuts retained their freshness even into the afternoon, which I attribute to it's perfect density, not too cake-like. Each bite was a fluffy, gossamer doughy caress to my mouth. The milk and white chocolate iced donut is another delectable blend of flavors with the base not being too overwhelmingly sweet. The cream filled French crullers were also something to definitely write home about. The lightness of the pastry dough really allow the warm, sweet cream to stand out.

I had a chance to talk to the proprietor who informed me that donut making is well known as a trade picked up by Cambodian immigrants in the seventies. It's estimated that over 90 percent of California's donut shops are Cambodian owned. A piece of that immigrant heritage resides in Fullerton in an unassuming strip mall on Brookhurst. The Cambodian-American owned Sweet O Donuts has been in business for twenty years and have achieved nothing short of deep fried alchemy.
